Psychedelics are in your future whether you like it or not. It’s true! There is a theory that we experience a release of DMT at near death and death experiences. This is potentially one final way your body shows up to escort your spirit into eternal energy. While we can’t say for sure, the conversations around psychedelics and earth medicine are becoming more closely connected to this concept.
I recently brought this topic to professional group, Speculative Futures: Portland. It was the first meeting of the year, we were talking about signals that arise and give us clues to our near future. An example given was, when you started seeing signs at local parks to not fly drones on the tennis courts. You then could see drones were becoming more accessible and utilized by the general public. Being in this space of entheogenic experimentation and anthropology, I kept seeing an influx of topics around the practice of a Death Doula from both social media and academic resources. I shared this Chacruna Institute article about death doula practices with the group. We decided to dive deeper and workshop the topic to see what might be possible 5 to 50 years from now. Here were some of the concepts folks envisioned for the psychedelic future as it relates to the life cycle.
Official jobs in psychedelic therapies covered by healthcare
Circular life centers to integrate human experience into the natural cycles of the environment.
Compost from bodies growing food and other plants
digital human archives as a way of representing the thoughts/soul of a person who has passed after they pass
people have escaped mundanity by eating mushrooms and living in the metaverse
cemeteries are a thing of the past; people are physically regrowing forest with their bodies
I had also attended some book clubs through Portland Psychedelic Society that have addressed so many wonderful topics on social justice, psychedelic therapy and integration, if you are curious about psychedelics and the emerging thoughts on social justice and practice check them out!
Here are some of the books we’ve gotten into so far!
If you are looking to get involved with the emerging psychedelic community, PPS is currently seeking volunteers.
